Artist Statement
In the winter UK artist Jan Vallance works from a canalside studio in Goyt Mill, an old textile mill in Marple Cheshire. But the Spring and Summer is her favourite time. This is when she divides her working time between the studio and home. “Home” is a narrowboat. She travels the canal system, popping up at floating markets, festivals, and sometimes just on her own. In previous years she has travelled for the whole of the Spring and Summer, but 2020 is going to be much more studio based, with travelling limited to Derbyshire and the North West.
Limited space on the boat means that smaller paintings are more practical to work on and this is where her 8” x 8” pieces are ideal. Acrylic on canvas is her medium of choice as the quick drying properties mean that she can work on the layers that make up her paintings. More studio time in 2020 means that she will be able to run workshops and paint the larger works she has been planning
Jan is currently working on larger studio paintings, based on her travels on the UK waterways and reflecting her love of the many aspects of canal life.
