Artist Statement
Colour, its potential to excite the eye, engage the heart and awaken the soul is central to my work. I am interested in the power of colour to alter mood and mindstate.
Working intuitively and in a wide range of media, my pieces are abstract, often inspired by an emotional response to a sense of place or time, generally in series, large scale on canvas or smaller on paper. Painting and monoprintmaking can become integrated so a piece which begins as a painterly screen print may be worked into using a range of mixed media and collage. Each piece is unique.
During 2020 I created mixed media paintings directly in response to the Pandemic and each relating in different ways to a sense of restriction or release into a freer state. These can be found on my website together with other recent series which include Urban, Jazz and Indian Memory unique screen prints, assemblages reflecting the surfaces, textures and rich colours of the iconic Victoria Baths Building in Manchester and additional mixed media paintings.
In 2020 I was shortlisted for the national printmaking ‘Flourish’ award and was a finalist in the Manchester HOME exhibition.
Recent exhibitions include: a solo show at the Pilcrow, Manchester and the Studios Gallery, New Mills and group shows at the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol; the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh; HOME, Manchester, Victoria Baths online exhibition Gala, Porthminster Gallery Winter Show, St Ives; Manchester Art Fair, Hepworth Print Fair, Surface Gallery, Nottingham; King street Studios, Lancaster; Stockport Art Gallery; Derbyshire Open Arts, Waterside Arts, Greater Manchester. I am represented by the Porthminster Gallery, St Ives and Manchester Gallery’s webshop and have work in private collections nationally and internationally in Sweden, Spain, Kenya, New Zealand and Australia.
