Artist Statement
Wiseheart Textiles is Kate Greatorex: hand-weaver, spinner and textile artist. She draws most of her inspiration from the industrial and natural landscapes that surround her. All her projects are individually designed and use natural fibres; ethically and, whenever possible, locally sourced. Using local fleeces, Kate had them spun to produce a “Northern Alchemy” wool. A portion of this is being hand-dyed, with colours inspired by Swizzels, and she is using it to weave a New Mills Tweed. Kate likes to work in collaboration with others; such as weaving the tweed for the local seamstress to create caps and clothing. While Kate works in a long-established tradition - her studio is proud host to a 160-year-old working loom – she believes that crafts need to live and develop in today’s world. She leads workshops and runs teaching groups in weaving, spinning and similar textile arts.
